An Overview

For over a century, TransAlta has powered critical industries across Canada, the United States, and Western Australia. But as teams expanded across remote sites and global offices, keeping everyone connected became increasingly complex. What started as a simple video conferencing setup in a Perth office kitchen was no longer fit for purpose, prompting the need for a smarter, more scalable solution.

The Challenges

As TransAlta’s operations expanded, so did the need for uninterrupted communication between teams spread across remote sites and global offices. Video conferencing quickly became essential, but the existing setup of collaboration tools struggled to keep pace. It couldn’t reliably support larger meetings, offer remote team building opportunities, deliver consistent audio-visual quality, or accommodate the physical limitations of the space. TransAlta needed a solution that was not only more powerful, but also flexible, intuitive, and ready to scale with the business.

The Solution

Building on a long-standing partnership, Ricoh designed a bespoke, mobile video conferencing system tailored to TransAlta’s space and needs. At its core: a flexible “super trolley” equipped with digital meeting boards, an intelligent tracking camera, and wireless audio, which fully integrates with Microsoft Teams. The result was a powerful, portable setup that transformed any space into a high-quality collaboration hub.

Our meeting capabilities have been significantly improved as a result of the new Ricoh solution. Staff find the equipment intuitive to use and remote participants report a more immersive experience.

The Benefits

The new solution has changed the way the team at TransAlta connect day to day. Conversations feel more natural, with clear audio and video making it easier for everyone to be seen and heard, no matter where they are. Meetings can run without the usual interruptions or technical frustrations, giving teams more time to focus on what matters. The setup also supports larger group sessions without added complexity, while reducing the need to travel between sites, saving time, cutting costs, and easing the environmental impact.

An added benefit of the solution is its dual functionality, when not in use for meetings, the screens can be repurposed as cloud based digital signage for corporate communication, helping keep teams informed and engaged across the business.

Our partnership with Ricoh goes beyond technology—it’s about shared values and long-term collaboration.
