Bringing it in house

Customer: Melbourne Mailing

Located in the Melbourne suburb of Alphington and commanding a vast two acres of warehouse space, Melbourne Mailing is a quiet – yet highly successful – achiever. Since the company’s 1994 founding in the lounge room of one of its directors, it has grown from strength to strength, gaining a solid lead in the end-to-end management of direct marketing, direct mail and fulfilment. An integral part of its business is a high-end laser print production facility, at the core of which is a fleet of Ricoh colour and black-and-white production printers.

Challenge: Bring it in house

Direct mail equates to volume. Large volumes of printing. For many years Melbourne Mailing had relied on a bank of 20 third-party black-and-white laser printers, two colour production printers and, for the majority of its colour (offset work), outsourcing. In 2012 the company’s CEO, Felice Armato, decided it was time to bring as much as practicable in house.

The Solution

The Benefits

Ricoh Pro C901

  • In-house capabilities
  • Increased productivity and efficiency
  • High volume throughput
  • Full automation of booklet making (plockmatic-configured)

Solution: Ricoh production print environment

Within a matter of months, two Ricoh Pro C901s were added to, with the purchase of four Ricoh black-and-white production printers. Barely six months after that, an additional four black-and-white printers were added to the fleet, making Melbourne Mailing one of the largest Ricoh sites in Australia.

The implementation of Melbourne Mailing’s Pro C901s was a clear example of rapid deployment for optimum uptime. On the day the two printers were to be installed, Felice relates that he checked on progress at 1pm only to find that both had been installed, configured and were running full production jobs.

The offset alternative

With one of the Pro C901s configured with a Plockmatic Production Booklet Maker, Melbourne Mailing has achieved less reliance on offset printing for full-colour booklet production. Featuring fully automatic collating, cover insertion, folding, binding and face trimming, the Plockmatic-configured Pro C901 is a major step forward for the company’s offering.

Result: The business relationship

While many businesses understand the importance of a relationship with key vendors, Melbourne Mailing has it very high on its list of priorities. "We choose our suppliers just as carefully as we want our customers to choose us," Felice states. "When we partner with a supplier, they’re part of the team; and this is one of the great things we appreciate about our relationship with Ricoh – they understand this and commit to that relationship."
